      HIGHLY MOTIVATED STUDENT-ATHLETES

They arrive in Chapel Hill with a hunger to learn. Several of them were high school valedictorians, class presidents and honor students. They become                                 active members of UNC’s  Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) and the athletic department’s prestigious Baddour Carolina Leadership Academy.

Many are multiple scholastic all-americans, all-conference scholar-athletes and post-graduate scholarship recipients. Several gymnasts have graduated as                       Phi Beta Kappa inductees and many continue on to graduate and professional degree programs.

        CIVIC MINDED

Carolina gymnasts are typically more active in community outreach programs than their peers.  They spend their fall weekends building houses for                                          Habitat for Humanity, accompanying children from the UNC Children’s Hospital to events on campus and serving as UNC ambassadors and providing                                    logistical support for the Annual Get Heeled 5K benefiting the UNC Cancer Hospital.

In early winter, they teach gymnastics to children who participate in the university’s annual “Kids Rock” program and to the children of the “Pink Pacers,”

a group of local volunteers who have provided resources for UNC’s Pediatric Oncology unit and programs assisting breast cancer survivors.

During the spring semester, the gymnastics team hosts a “Health Fair” in conjunction with home competition. The Lineberger Cancer Center’s Pediatric                             Oncology Unit co-sponsor  the event along with the Pink Pacers. And while their peers are on spring break  vacations, the gymnasts stay on campus to

train and compete. That week they traditionally find an opportunity to visit and read to children at local elementary schools.

        CHAMPIONS

                   Carolina gymnasts are accomplished athletes.

They have won five team conference championship titles in the last eleven years; qualified to the NCAA regional championships for the last twleve                                     consecutive years and advanced 13 individual finalists to the NCAA national championships. They have tallied four All-Americas titles and two national                             championship titles. Carolina graduate, Courtney Bumpers (2006) won two back-to-back national titles on floor exercise in 2004 and 2005. She is the                                   NCAA’s all-time record holder on the event with a perfect score of 10.00.

Carolina gymnasts are... full-time students and full-time varsity athletes who have an unsurpassed enthusiasm for serving their community. They are true                           champions and exceptional role models for people of all ages.
